The state of New Jersey can only be given partial credit for driving Sarah Macy (whose hand holds the Silly Pencil) into the arms of humor: Sarah‘s offbeat bi-coastal upbringing must share in the blame for that.

Sarah grew up straddling extemes: while one of her feet was planted firmly down-to-earth in the gnarly roots of yankee New England, the other foot was running around in flip-flops (when she bothered to wear shoes at all) in sun-drenched Southern California bohemia. After graduating from California Institute of the Arts, her eventual transplantation to the Garden State clinched her comic-hearted way of interpreting life‘s adsurdities.

.Sarah‘s editorial cartoons have been published regularly in Northern New Jersey‘s newspapers, and she is well known for her Eighth Grade Editorial Cartooning program in the suburban New Jersey public schools system. Professor SillyPencil encourages her students to feel glad about being New Jerseyans, because living in a state that is often the butt of jokes builds good, strong critical thinkers (humor required)!

She is the illustrator of the award-winning “Rule of Thumb” desk calendar series (2004 & 2005).
